The Librarian is Kathy Holland (kholland@gitxsan.com)
, and the Assistant Librarian is Elaine Sampson (emsampson@gitxsan.com).
The Library
The Gitxsan Library has been in existence
since the mid-1970s, when the Gitxsan Hereditary
Chiefs and Elders began the meticulous task of documenting their traditional
knowledge, which later served as the basis for the Gitxsan’s
precedent-setting aboriginal land title action, the Delgamuukw case.
The Library, under the administration of the Gitxsan
Treaty Office, has become an extensive repository for an information-based
collection pertaining to the Gitxsan and
other subjects with a focus on First Nations. The Library provides opportunities
to researchers to access the material, and promotes the collection through
educational initiatives. The Library has undertaken steps in recent months
to begin electronically preserving their audio-visual collection.
The library is a member of CHIN, the Canadian Heritage Information Network.
