Gitxsan Women's Day 2012

Gitxsan Women's Day 2012
06 March 2012

Over 100 women gathered in the gal tsup of Gitwangak to celebrate the 11th annual Hl Daxgyet Haanak (Gitxsan Womens Day). It is celebrated every year on February 20th in honor of celebrating the women of matrilineal society. It is meant to bring together the women for a day of sharing information, remembering those that have left us, honoring and fun.

Liz Williams of Gitwangak was our gracious M.C. and she added grace and kindness in taking us through the day, thank you Liz.

As started every year we began with the drum beat in honor of those hanaak that have left us. Next we were entertained by the gitxsan children attending the Wilp Si Wilaaxsw Hl Simgiigyet singing a welcome song for Gitwangak and a song about the animals. It was very precious to hear our madjagalee singing and learning our language to keep us strong as a nation.

We then had an update and question period with Gwaans about the work of the Gitxsan Chiefs Office. We then shared a meal and through out the day were draws for door prizes with the Gitxsan Women's Day logo and as well Yoobx donated $200 cash for prizes so there were 4 draws of $50. Sandy Reviakin also donated a Gitxsanimx Calendar and Bea Rabocz a Pillow embroidered with a Gibuu Crest. Thank you each for generous donations.

We had good discussion on our theme" Women keep the Spirit of our Community". We heard many recollections about how our mothers taught and showed us about community spirit. Whether is was learning to put up our own foods, cooking for community events, getting ready for sports day, worshiping Creator, basket socials. Women shared their stories and teachings with grace and humor so we often laughed but our hearts were touched by those that shared.

The highlight was a singing contest in Gitxsanimx and we had Axgiigigi be our judge. We had 11 entries and it was so entertaining and uplifting. Our winners were Vera Derrick 3rd place, Liz William 2nd place and Pat Douse 1st place.

Simoogit Niikyap closed the event with the following "It is good to get together for a happy event like celebrating the women in our society. Lately we have had many sad events, I am grateful for this day and the joy and uplifting of our hearts".

Thank you to Andy Quock for allowing us to use your P.A system, and the community of Gitwangak for graciously hosting our event. We look forward to seeing you next year in Gitanmaax
