Gitxsan Chiefs' Weekly Update Feb 23, 2011

Women’s Day

From all accounts Women’s Day was a very successful event, attracting women far and wide from other native nations. Next year’s hosts will be Gitwangak and we trust it will also be as successful.

The event stared with drumming, commemorating the women that have left us. Their names were mentioned by loved ones left behind.

The lead negotiator for the Gitxsan, Yoobxw spoke first. He spoke of the fundamental principles that are dear to the Gitxsan, and the flavour that needs to remain post-Treaty. Die on the hill for water, etc. Elmer rubs shoulders with high level politicians and industry executives. He is widely respected in these circles and gives the Gitxsan a good face out there.

Gwaans does the detailed articulation on the negotiating table. When she says something on the Gitxsan stance, it’s crystal clear. We can’t ask for a better person to do what she does.

Luutkwidziwas is much on the same vein as Gwaans, and coupled with his lawyer training, they are a team hard to beat.

Puglaas — Jody Wilson Raybould — daughter of Bill Wilson, has earned her own stripes. A special guest at this women’s gathering. She is especially fond of the strength of the Gitxsan.

Very worthy honorees still with us are Hattie Westle, Margaret Stevens and Irene Cournoyer. Others spoke for these special people to say or remind us what they were all about in Gitxsan society. The event spoke for itself and one had to be there to appreciate it.
