Gitxsan & Wet'suwet'en Economic Development Corp Dissolves
01 April 2003

The Gitxsan & Wet'suwet'en Economic Development Corp is now in the process of dissolving. The member bands have opted for independence effective new fiscal year. GWEDC office will close at the end of April 11, 2003 business day.

Anne Howard, GWEDC senior employee, advises "It is with regret that we have to announce that we are closing our doors forever. The GWEDC directors and staff had a final meeting to discuss this closing with all Chief and Councillors in the area on March 28, 2003." Howard concludes that the impact to the community and constituents:
1. There will be no more loans guaranteed on behalf of our members.
2. There will be no more microbusiness grants available. You will have to apply directly at your band offices if a program is available.
3. The trade shows hosted by GWEDC will discontinue. We encourage that this be picked up by another organization. It is vital to our communities.
4. GWEDC will no longer be available to assist you with your business ideas and business planning. You will have to go directly to your band offices.

In conclusion, Howard is philosophical, "Sometimes we have to accept change. We have strong people in our communities. The strength is in our Gitxsan hereditary system. We have to find a way of working with the band councils. I anticipate that an ec dev corporation will emerge from willing communities within the Gitxsan area but probably not within the year."
