Geological Research Within 50 Miles Valhalla Steelhead fishing lodge
10 July 2003

Hazelton, BC

Attention Gitxsan Chiefs.

Between July 15 and August 17, 2003, the government of British Columbia, in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Canada, will be conducting geological research within the McConnell Creek map sheet (56 degrees to 57 degrees N latitude and 127 degrees to 128 degrees W longitude). Geologist will be examining an area extending out some 50 kilometres in all directions from the Valhalla Steelhead fishing lodge near the Minaret Logging Camp on the Sustut River. This work will include parts of a number of watersheds including: Skeena, Sustut and Omineca rivers, and Thutade Lake.

The main objective of our field work is to obtain information that will help assess the oil and gas potential of this area. Geologists will be collecting field data between 2003 and 2005, releasing preliminary information on a yearly basis, and producing a final report at the end of the program.

Geologist, with helicopter support, will be working on a daily basis in the area. They will walk along an area with exposed rock and will take notes on the type of rocks present and their orientation, so as to produce a geological map of the region. There will be little or no disturbance from our research activities. Rock samples up to 2 kilograms (4.4 lb) in size may be collected in some areas.

This project will only try and determine whether these rocks have the potential to contain oil and gas accumulations. Ultimately it will be up to oil and gas exploration companies to act on this information and drill wells to look for potential hydrocarbon accumulations. You will be consulted on any development proposals that may create disturbance on the land in the future. There are no such proposals at this time.

If you have any questions, please contact Filippo Ferri (250) 952-0677 or Mark Hayes (250) 952-0364. You are welcome to visit Pilippo at the camp and discuss any aspect of the program.
