SUSTAINABLE WATERSHED PLANNING

There are nine watersheds within the Gitxsan Territory (see Maps). Our goal as a nation is to use these units for planning and policy making that will determine to what uses the territories will be put. This will activate the Huwilp (House groups) to engage in Sustainable Watershed Planning.

We are beginning the work of gathering the Simgigyet and Huwilp for this
purpose. We have a coordinator that is starting a series of communications with various stakeholders. Over the months of April, May, June and July the following activities will occur:

  • Meeting with Huwilp members of the nine Gitxsan Watersheds.
  • Once contact has been established then small group meetings will occur in the watersheds.
  • A presentation on Sustainability will be given to members and the process of identifying planning needs will be started.
  • Meeting with various Ministry personnel to identify and get copies of information about Gitxsan Territories.
  • Data that exists at the Ministry and Gitxsan levels will be combined by the GIS technicians and sorted by watershed.
  • Survey of other data needed will be compiled into a list with a plan of action.
  • Huwilp in the Watershed will make the commitment to the planning process and the next phase will begin.

The start up of this process is integral to getting all participants communicating and dialoguing on this issue. Gitxsan huwilp members are excited about this process and it will demonstrate our collectively commitment to moving our economic aspirations ahead collectively. The next phase of this process with see the technical teams within each watershed begin the process of analyzing the data with members of the Huwilp either being part of the technical team or working along side those with this expertise.

We have a tremendous foundation for this project with the work that has been completed by the Gitxsan Watershed Authority.
