The Gitxsan are a nation continuing to
manage their territories and resources.
The Gitxsan’s fundamental political
and economic unit is their ancient territoriees which is owned and managed
by each Wilp.
The land and the Gitxsan family are inseperable.
Why do the Gitxsan want a treaty?
Since contact the Gitxsan have fought
against the destruction of their territories.
The Gitxsan have sought a treaty since
that time.
The Gitxsan intend to have full jurisdictional
recognition of their right to govern their territories.
What do the Gitxsan want from a treaty?
The Gitxsan are seeking;
an alternative to the land selection model; benefits to future generations;
compensation for past injuries; no extinguishment; a living treaty.
What about the non-Gitxsan living in
the territories?
The Gitxsan are presently meeting with
municipalities and community organizations to define a relationship.
The Gitxsan recognize the need for a significant
role for municipalities and unorganized districts.
The Gitxsan are seeking meaningful involvement
of non-Gitxsan in the treaty negotiations
and outcomes.
