RE: Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs Tripartite Treaty Negotiations

Dear Ms. Boscariol

Thank you for meeting with the Gitxsan Treaty Society on November 14th and for your December 11th letter concerning Canada's new, "results based" approach to treaty negotiations.

Your letter asked if we were 1) prepared to negotiate a treaty based on the core elements of this approach you discussed with us and, 2) if we had any reservations or saw any challenges in the approach and its components.

First, we appreciate that Canada wants to "accelerate progress" and "conclude agreements in a timely way." So do we.

Province ignoring Gitxsan interests in offer of Gitxsan land to Kitselas First Nation

Hazelton B.C. - The Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs are expressing concern over the details of a draft Agreement in Principle between the province of BC and the Kitselas First Nation released today. The offer contains land that is part of Gitxsan traditional territory. This is being done without proper consultation or accommodation of the affected Simgiigyet (Chiefs).

Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs re-enter offices for first time – Door remains open to all Chiefs

Hazelton BC – A majority of Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs returned to meet at the Chiefs offices in Hazelton today, for the first time in over 7 months. The Simgiigyet (chiefs) donned their ceremonial regalia and, as Gitluudahl played his family's Limx Oiy (house's sacred song), walked as one back into the offices.
